Closed petition Ban the import, manufacture, and sale of disposable e-cigarettes or vapes

For a combination of health and environmental reasons, the import, manufacture, and sale of disposable e-cigarettes or vapes should be completely banned, and the sale of reusable e-cigarettes and liquids should be properly licensed.

More details

E-cigarettes have undoubtedly helped many people give up smoking, and it does appear they are probably the lesser of two evils.

Disposable vapes, however, appear to be ruthlessly targeted at children, with little or no quality control over the contents. There is an epidemic of young teenagers becoming addicted to nicotine and poisoning themselves with lead, other heavy metals, and carcinogenic compounds.

On top of that, the e-waste created wastes valuable resources, and poses a fire risk.

Use and sale of illegal vapes debated by MPs

On Tuesday 16 January, Peter Gibson MP led a Westminster Hall debate in Parliament on the use and sale of illegal vapes. Health Minister Dame Andrea Leadsom MP responded to the debate on behalf of the Government.

What are Westminster Hall debates?

Westminster Hall is the second Chamber of the House of Commons.

Westminster Hall debates give MPs an opportunity to raise local or national issues and receive a response from a government minister. Any MP can take part in a Westminster Hall debate.

Debates in Westminster Hall take place on ‘general debate' motions expressed in neutral terms. These motions are worded ‘That this House has considered [a specific matter]'. This means that Westminster debates don’t end in a vote on a particular action or decision.
