We’re waiting for a new Petitions Committee

Petitions had to stop because of the recent general election. Once a new Petitions Committee is set up by the House of Commons, petitions will start again.

Closed petition Seek a global moratorium on development of AI technology due to extinction risk

We welcome the recent recognition of existential risk from Artificial Intelligence by the Prime Minister. Further to this, we request that the Government seeks a global moratorium on further development of the technology until AI Safety/Alignment research catches up.

More details

Many believe that Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is on the horizon. All that may be needed for it to happen is more compute and data (money) being thrown at it. Some experts have said that powerful AI systems are already uncontrollable (and only not a significant danger because they are relatively weak). Systems much more intelligent than humans may be built soon, and may be inherently uncontrollable. We need to pause development of these systems globally until there is a consensus on how to align them to humanity.
