Closed petition Require housing for wheelchair users be included in local housing plans

To amend the National Planning Policy Framework to require each Local Planning Authority to set include within local housing plans a policy for a percentage of new homes to be wheelchair accessible. Plans that fail to do so should not be accepted by the Planning Inspectorate.

More details

It is estimated that around 400,000 wheelchair users live in unsuitable homes. We want more wheelchair accessible homes built to ensure disabled people can live in homes suitable for their needs; improving their quality of life, independence, opportunities to work and be involved in community life. Without more wheelchair user housing, too many disabled people will be forced to remain in unsuitable homes, impacting their health and wellbeing, as well as creating additional costs for the public sector.

MPs want to hear your views on finding or adapting suitable housing

The House of Commons Levelling Up, Housing and Communities Select Committee would like to hear your views on finding or adapting suitable housing.

The Levelling Up, Housing and Communities Committee is a group of 11 MPs from different political parties who examine the work of the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.

The Committee is currently investigating how the Government, local councils and developers can ensure disabled people have access to housing that is suitable for their needs. So far in the inquiry, the Committee has held an evidence session with disability, housing and planning experts and will be putting questions to the Housing Minister later in the inquiry.

As part of its inquiry, the Committee wants to hear from disabled people about their experiences of finding and adapting suitable housing in the social housing and private rented sectors as well as through home ownership, what further support people need, and how people have found the process of applying for a Disabled Facilities Grant.

Have your say by taking part in a short survey

Take part in the survey to share your experiences of finding or adapting suitable accessible housing and your views on what more could be done to improve housing provision for disabled people.

Share your views at a roundtable in Westminster

The Committee will be holding a roundtable event in Westminster on Monday the 4th of March to hear from disabled people about their experiences as renters or as homeowners. This will be an informal discussion with members of the Committee to inform their inquiry.

A summary note will be produced following the discussion. Participants will remain anonymous and are free to share as much or as little as they like.

If you would like to participate in the roundtable on Monday the 4th of March, please email selcomengagement@parliament.uk to express your interest by Wednesday 21st February. When expressing your interest, please do let us know what reasonable adjustments you may need to participate fully in the roundtable. Reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed.
