Closed petition Require phenylalanine be included in nutritional information on food and drinks
Closed on
Ensure food and beverage companies include the phenylalanine amount and percentage in the content of food and drink labels. This should be added to existing requirements to list the amounts of fat, saturates, carbohydrate, sugars, protein and salt.
People with Phenylketonuria (PKU) cannot break down the amino acid phenylalanine, which builds up in their blood and brain, and can lead to brain damage.
Protein is made up of many amino acids and current labels do not provide enough information regarding the amino acids present in foods or beverages. This can make purchasing food difficult for people with PKU.
Requiring food and beverage companies to include the phenylalanine amount and percentage in the content of food and drink labels should make it easier for people with PKU to avoid foods that are not suitable for them.
