Closed petition Require menus to be available in accessible formats for visually impaired people

Closed on

I would like the UK Government to require hospitality businesses with 3 or more venues to have adapted menus available for visually impaired people. This would mean that visually impaired people would know they could expect an adapted menu when eating at a chain restaurant.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission has stated that: "When written information is part of a service, a service provider must think about providing it in alternative formats, such as in Braille, on CD, or electronically, for disabled people who need the information in this form."

In practice, many businesses fail to provide menus in alternative formats, and we think this needs to be made a specific legal requirement.

It's demeaning for visually impaired people to have parts of the menu read to them, and does not promote complete independence. I'd like the Government to change this as we should have everything available to us, as sighted people do.
