Closed petition: Run a public information campaign on the climate crisis

Closed on

Communicate clearly:
1) the science behind the climate crisis - how & why for the first time in the last year we've averaged 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels
2) the implications of going beyond this and what needs to be done to address it globally, nationally, locally and individually.

We believe that the science is clear and we only have to look outside or watch the news to see extreme weather like wild fires, floods & droughts happening regularly, causing death & loss of crops. We think that MPs and the media treat the climate crisis as a matter of opinion or side-line it, people often express confusion, anxious and resistant to change. We believe a shared understanding led by government is needed to protect, prepare and unite us so we face this unprecedented threat together.

  • Government responded to this petition

This government is committed to ensuring that everyone can contribute to the UK achieving net zero and are scoping the most effective way to communicate about climate change to the public.

Achieving net zero requires a wide-reaching transformation of the UK economy and will unlock opportunities for sustainable growth, creating jobs and driving investment across the UK while reducing emissions.

This government is committed to ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to contribute to the UK achieving net zero, supporting people and communities to take action and demonstrating the benefits of the transition.

There is already a large volume of publicly available information on climate change, including from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the World Meteorological Organisation, the Met Office and other academic institutions, as well as the government’s ‘Climate Change Explained’ website and media sites such as the BBC. At the same time, it remains important for us to partner with trusted voices to enable us to deliver a wide-reaching net zero transition and ensure diverse perspectives are considered. We are currently scoping the right way of communicating this to the public and are considering all options, including a public information and behaviour change campaign.
