Closed petition Pay all unpaid carers carer's allowance, to recognise and support them

Carers allowance is only granted if you earn under a certain amount and is treated like a benefit. Some carers are struggling but exempt from carer's allowance. We think that carer's allowance needs to be offered to all unpaid carers.

More details

Some carers cannot access respite care easily. A number are forced to give up work or juggle work and care. An unpaid carer saves a lot on live in care or care home costs by taking on an unpaid carer role. They need financial and practical support.

  1. 'Inequalities faced by unpaid carers': debate in Parliament

On 20 November, MPs took part in a debate entitled 'Inequalities faced by unpaid carers'.

This was a Backbench Business debate led by Anna Dixon MP. Minister for Care Stephen Kinnock MP responded on behalf of the Government.

    Explainer

Backbench Business debates give MPs an opportunity to debate a topic of their choice, and receive a response from the Government.

    They are a way to:

    • raise awareness of an issue
    • seek to influence government policy
    • put the views of backbench MPs, political parties, and the Government on record.

They do not generally involve a vote on a particular action or decision.
