  Government responds to petition on the national bus fare cap

  The Government has responded to a public (paper) petition raising concerns about its plans to increase the £2 bus fare cap to £3 from January 2025. The petition was presented to the House of Commons by Zarah Sultana MP on behalf of residents of the constituency of Coventry South.

  The petition asks the House of Commons to urge the Government to reconsider changes to the £2 bus fare cap, and to provide adequate support through 2025 to ensure that public transport is made easier, cheaper and more accessible.

  In response to the petition's request, the Government states that it intends to introduce a new £3 cap on single bus fares in England outside London from 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2025. Passengers in rural communities and towns could save up to 80% compared to the commercial fare.

  Not all single fares will rise to £3. Routes where fares are less than £3 will only be allowed to increase by inflation. Local authorities and mayors in combined authorities can also fund their own schemes to keep fares down.
