Petition Abolish leasehold ownership
We call for the abolition of leasehold ownership in the UK. England and Wales are some of the few countries who adhere to this system of property ownership. We believe abolishing leasehold ownership would liberate leaseholders from this type of ownership which we view as outdated.
More details
We are concerned that leaseholders are left exposed to service charge hikes, ground rents hikes, refusals by some freeholders to extend their leases etc. Many feel they are trapped in flats they cannot sell because of the conditions that come with leasehold ownership.

Explainer
This is a debate in Westminster Hall, scheduled by the Backbench Business Committee.
These debates give MPs an opportunity to debate a topic of their choice, and receive a response from the Government.
They are a way to:
raise awareness of an issue
seek to influence government policy
put the views of backbench MPs, political parties, and the Government on record.
They do not generally involve a vote on a particular action or decision.
