We think the government should scrap the two-child benefit cap to support struggling families as we think this policy pushes many children into poverty and worsens inequality. We think scrapping the cap would provide vital support, alleviate hardship, and ensure equal opportunities for all children.

We think the two-child benefit cap forces families into poverty and disproportionately affects low-income households, leaving children without basic necessities. Labour opposed this policy when it was introduced, and now in government, we think they have the opportunity to act on their principles. We consider that removing the cap would reduce child poverty, tackle inequality, and support struggling families. Every child deserves equal opportunities, and we think scrapping this cap would be a vital step in creating a fairer society.

    Government responds to petition Two-Child Benefit Cap

    The Government has responded to a public (paper) petition calling for the Government to consider the impact of the two-child benefit cap in developing a strategy to end child poverty. The petition was presented to the House of Commons by Rachael Maskell MP on behalf of residents of the constituency of York Central.

    The petition asks the House of Commons to urge the Government to consider the impact of the two-child benefit cap in developing a strategy to end child poverty.

    In response to the petition's request, the Government states that as announced in the Budget on 26 November 2025, they will remove the two‑child limit from April 2026 and are progressing the required legislation as quickly as possible within legal and parliamentary constraints.
