Closed petition A2 motorcycle licences to upgrade to an A license automatically after 2 years

To revert to the automatic update of an A2 license to a full A license after 2 years of riding.

More details

This is instead of taking the same practical examination two times.

In the past, an A2 rider would wait for two years before automatically achieving a full unrestricted motorcycle license. I propose we now return to that scheme again.

  1. Road safety: recent activity in Parliament

The topic of road safety has been raised several times recently in Parliament, including through:

    • the Government's new Road Safety Strategy
    • a Backbench Business debate

    Road Safety Strategy

On 8 January, Transport Minister Lillian Greenwood MP made a statement to the House of Commons on the Strategy.

MPs then questioned the Minister about the statement.

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has subsequently launched a consultation on improving moped and motorcycle training, testing and licensing. It will close at 11.59pm on 11 May 2026.

    Debate on road safety

This was a Backbench Business debate led by Anna Dixon MP.

Transport Minister Lillian Greenwood MP responded on behalf of the Government.
