I think a lot of the chicken sold in the UK comes from unethical, overcrowded chicken farms that develop fast growing chicken breeds, otherwise known as 'Frankenchickens'.

The reason that I think these farms are unethical is because I believe the chickens live a life of suffering as they have been modified to eat unnatural quantities of food to fuel their fast growth. This can lead to many problems, including their inability to walk and often laying in their own waste. The thing that angers me most is that I think most people have no awareness of this issue and continue to buy cheap chicken that had been raised in what I think is a disgraceful way.

    Government responds to petition on intensive poultry units

    The Government has responded to a public (paper) petition calling for a ban on new intensive poultry units. The petition was presented to the House of Commons by Ellie Chowns MP on behalf of residents of the United Kingdom.

    The petition asks the House of Commons to urge the Government to introduce a ban on new intensive poultry units, to support farmers into transitioning out of the poultry industry and to encourage reduced chicken consumption to achieve more sustainable levels.

    In response to the petition's request, the Government states it prioritises cleaning up rivers, seas, and lakes, including the River Wye. Efforts involve working with stakeholders including local MPs, farmers, and environmental NGOs to tackle pollution. All farms, including non-permitted poultry farms, are subject to the farming rules for water, slurry silage and agricultural fuel oil regulations, and nitrates regulations, which are inspected for compliance by the Environment agency.

    The Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs is consulting on national planning reforms to help farmers diversify and improve animal welfare. The Government commits £5 billion over two years to support farming, enhance food security, and promote British produce in public sector catering. The Government is also undertaking work on planning reforms to support food production, diversification of income streams, and fair competition across supply chains.
