Closed Drivers arrested for drug driving to be banned immediately

Change the law surrounding dangerous driving to mandate that people who are arrested for having illegal drugs in their system while driving are immediately banned, there and then. We believe this will help prevent further accidents or death.

    Road safety: recent activity in Parliament

    The topic of road safety has been raised several times recently in Parliament, including through:

    • the Government's new Road Safety Strategy
    • a Backbench Business debate

    Road Safety Strategy

    On 8 January, Transport Minister Lillian Greenwood MP made a statement to the House of Commons on the Strategy.

    MPs then questioned the Minister about the statement.

    The Government has subsequently launched a consultation on proposed changes to penalties for motoring offences. It will close at 11.59pm on 11 May 2026.

    This was a Backbench Business debate led by Anna Dixon MP.

    Transport Minister Lillian Greenwood MP responded on behalf of the Government.
