Rejected petition: Create a £1 per square foot per year service charge to pay for public transport
Rejected on
I believe that since nobody created the land, it's only fair that it's taxed. It may not appeal to landlords, but we don't have to ask them. A £1 per square foot charge can contribute significantly towards improving public transport, as well as reducing strikes and the cost to consumers.
It should fall on both residential and commercial property. In future, more valuable properties may have to pay a higher service charge than less valuable properties. It may be worth reading the book Progress and Poverty by Henry George.
