Closed Make people aged 70 retake their driving test, and do so every 5 years

I would like the government to make it mandatory for people aged 70 to retake the driving test to ensure they are safe to drive. This should then re occur every 5 years at ages 75, 80, 85 and so on. I believe that this would make roads safer.

    Road safety: recent activity in Parliament

    The topic of road safety has been raised several times recently in Parliament, including through:

    • the Government's new Road Safety Strategy
    • a Backbench Business debate

    Road Safety Strategy

    On 8 January, Transport Minister Lillian Greenwood MP made a statement to the House of Commons on the Strategy.

    MPs then questioned the Minister about the statement.

    The Government has subsequently launched a consultation on introducing mandatory eyesight testing for older drivers. It will close at 11.59pm on 11 May 2026.

    This was a Backbench Business debate led by Anna Dixon MP.

    Transport Minister Lillian Greenwood MP responded on behalf of the Government.
