Closed petition: Give trans people legal access to single-sex spaces of their acquired gender
Closed on
We want the government to give trans people legal access to single-sex spaces of their acquired gender. We feel that the recent supreme court ruling could undermine trans people's access to single-sex spaces and make them vulnerable.
Whilst some female only spaces may need to be protected, we think the government could legislate in a way that is more circumstantial and fair to everyone. We are concerned that post-op trans women could be forced into men's changing rooms and post-testosterone trans men could be forced to use women's bathrooms.
The Gender Recognition Act (2004) enables people to legally change their gender. The Equality Act (2010) prevents discrimination on the basis of gender reassignment. We think our laws should draw a healthy balance between all parties. We are concerned that the recent supreme court ruling could leave trans people with no alternative spaces to use.
