Rejected petition Reduce the retirement age for Prison Officers from 68 to 60 in line with Police.

Reduce the retirement age of Prison Officers from 68 to 60, in line with Police & Fire Officers.

Reasons:

Mental & Physical Demands
Health Impacts
Disparity with Police & Firefighters
Safety Concerns
Retention & Recruitment

More details

Mental & Physical Demands: Daily violence, stress & physical interventions, making working until 68 unrealistic.

Health Impacts: One of the most stressful jobs with most not reaching retirement age, or going off unwell.

Disparity with Police, Army & Firefighters: Other services retire at 60.

Safety Concerns: Older officers may struggle to restrain younger fit prisoners, causing safety issues.

Retention & Recruitment: This retirement age deters recruits & increases attrition.
