Closed petition Fund wheelchairs and changing places facilities for beaches

We would like the government to fund better basic disabled facilities for beaches. By that we mean at least one beach wheelchair and a changing places toilet along with it. We have found some beaches have one or the other but a lot of disabled people need both.

More details

Many disabled children love being in the sea. Finding a beach that has both a wheelchair and a changing places facility can be hard work and some people have to drive long distances for this. Please help us fix this.

  1. Government responds to petition on Changing Places Facilities

The Government has responded to a public (paper) petition calling for dedicated Changing Places facilities in West Bridgford. The petition was presented to the House of Commons by James Naish MP on behalf of residents of the constituency of Rushcliffe in Nottinghamshire.

The petition asks the House of Commons to urge the Government to work with Rushcliffe Borough Council to consider reallocating funds so that Changing Places facilities can be delivered in West Bridgford as soon as possible, and to prioritise the delivery of Changing Places facilities nationally.

In response to the petition's request, the Government states that the £30.5 million Changing Places programme funded 483 new facilities across England before closing in March 2025, with ongoing provision supported through mandatory building regulations and wider local authority funding. Rushcliffe Borough Council has already benefited from the programme, receiving funding for three facilities at Rushcliffe Country Park, Gresham Sports Pavilion and Cotgrave Leisure Centre.

    What are public (paper) petitions?

    Explainer

Westminster Hall debates give MPs an opportunity to debate a topic of their choice, and receive a response from the Government.

    They are a way to:

    • raise awareness of an issue
    • seek to influence government policy
    • put the views of backbench MPs, political parties, and the Government on record.

They do not involve a vote on a particular action or decision.
