Petition All wastewater to be filtered of chemicals, pharmaceuticals & microplastics

We want the government to pass legislation to require all commercial and utility wastewater to be more comprehensively filtered to help remove more harmful chemicals, pharmaceuticals and microplastics before it enters the environment.

More details

We are concerned that microplastics, chemicals and pharmaceuticals are harming rivers, wildlife and public health. We want mandatory full filtration that will require stricter environmental licensing and place legal responsibility on businesses and government. This could protect ecosystems and secure clean water for future generations.

  1. Protecting and restoring river habitats: debate in Parliament

On 29 January, MPs took part in a debate on protecting and restoring river habitats.

This was a Backbench Business debate led by Lloyd Hatton MP. Environment Minister Emma Hardy MP responded on behalf of the Government.

    Explainer

Backbench Business debates give MPs an opportunity to debate a topic of their choice, and receive a response from the Government.

    They are a way to:

    • raise awareness of an issue
    • seek to influence government policy
    • put the views of backbench MPs, political parties, and the Government on record.

They do not generally involve a vote on a particular action or decision.
