Closed petition: Strengthen the Allotments Act 1908 with a time limit and mandatory acquisition.
Closed on
We want Parliament to amend the Small Holdings and Allotments Act 1908.
It currently places a statutory duty on councils to provide allotments, but with no waiting time limit, we feel it's ineffective.
We want to add a waiting time limit and require councils to actively acquire land to meet this, which we think would end long waiting lists
People may have to wait decades for an allotment plot.
We think allotments are vital green spaces that offer significant benefits for both people and the environment.
They improve physical and mental health through active gardening and time in nature. They also can save money and provide access to fresh, healthy food.
They build social connections, create local hubs, and combat loneliness.
They support biodiversity, provide habitats for wildlife, and help reduce our carbon footprint.
