Russia is helping finance its illegal invasion of Ukraine by oil and gas exports, including LNG. The UK sanctions all imports of Russian oil and gas. It also sanctions the shipping and insurance of Russian oil sold above a cap. It must now sanction the shipping and insurance of all Russian LNG.

Russia’s exports of oil and gas are its main source of foreign exchange, helping fund its criminal invasion of Ukraine. The extraction, production, shipping, and burning of Russian LNG are also significant contributors to Arctic and global heating. Some analysis has shown that since February 2022, UK-owned or insured vessels have carried around £45 billion, (76%) of Russia’s LNG exports - almost 4 times the UK's £12.8bn total aid to Ukraine up to February 2025.
