Rejected petition Require Budget to be void and election held if Ministers misled public

We ask the Government to confirm that if Ministers are found to have misled the public about the state of the public finances, the Budget should be voided and a general election called.

More details

The public must be able to trust the information used to justify a Budget. If independent scrutiny shows that Ministers gave misleading statements about the fiscal position, this undermines democratic legitimacy. A mechanism should ensure the Budget is void and an election held if such misconduct is established.

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do.

It's unclear what you are asking for. The Treasury Select Committee and the OBR already *do* carry out independent assessments of the public finances in the context of Government/Treasury claims. If the House were to find that a Chancellor had misled the public, they would have to stand down. Is this something you want this just for the most recent budget, or also for all subsequent budgets? Please clarify what you want the Government to do.

We do already have a petition on calling for a general election:
