Open petition: Require schools to teach British Sign Language from Key Stage 2 & at GCSE

Created by Melissa Musgrove
Closes on

Require schools to teach British Sign Language from Key Stage 2 as it could promote inclusion, accessibility and ensure everyone is heard. BSL supports Deaf and SEN children, improves communication for all, and should be available at GCSE level like other language options.

We believe British Sign Language should be introduced in England’s primary schools, ideally beginning from Key Stage 2 in line with when languages such as French are taught. BSL is a legally recognised language in England, Wales and Scotland under the British Sign Language Act 2022.

The national curriculum should be updated to include BSL, as more people are using sign language than ever before. Early teaching could promote inclusion, support Deaf and SEN children, and improve communication and understanding for all pupils.
