Rejected petition: Introduce newborn screening for Spinal Muscular Atrophy in the UK immediately.

Rejected on

There are three treatments currently available for Spinal Muscular Atrophy on the NHS. All require treatment to commence prior to symptoms commencing in order to achieve the best outcome.

The National Screening Committee reviewed ‘real world data’ and suggested the introduction of screening would save 2.9 babies lives a year.
