Open petition: Formal recognition of climate-displaced people within the asylum system
Created by Iris Hoare and Eloise Tittmann
Closes on
Amend immigration and asylum law to establish a clear legal status for people displaced by climate change, provide access to protection comparable to refugee status, and create defined humanitarian pathways and resettlement schemes for climate-displaced people.
Climate change is already driving mass displacement, with estimates of over 30 million people forced from their homes each year by climate-related disasters. The World Bank warns up to 216 million people could be displaced by climate impacts by 2050. UK asylum law offers no protection for those displaced by climate change. As a historic high emitter and global leader, we feel the UK has a moral responsibility to respond through clear legal recognition and safe humanitarian pathways.
