Rejected petition Make non-fatal strangulation an attempted murder offence or increase charges

Parliament must strengthen UK domestic violence laws with harsher sentences. Non-fatal strangulation should be charged as attempted murder. Putting hands around someone’s throat restricts air and blood flow and can kill. This must not be treated as minor assault.

More details

Domestic violence is rising and victims deserve stronger protection. Non-fatal strangulation is not “minor” assault, it is a life-threatening act. If someone puts their hands around another person’s throat, they are restricting airflow and blood flow with the intent to cause serious harm or death. Strangulation is a key predictor of future homicide. Laws must change so non-fatal strangulation is treated as attempted murder with stricter sentencing.
