Petition Review Handling of Abuse Reports Where Women Are Subject to Counter Allegations
We call on the Government to review the procedures followed by police forces in England and Wales when responding to reports of abuse against women and girls, particularly where counter-allegations are made by the alleged perpetrator.
More details
In our view, women and girls reporting domestic abuse or sexual violence often face inadequate police responses, especially when perpetrators make counter allegations. We do not think that these tactics, recognised in coercive control guidance, are not applied consistently, leading to victims being wrongly treated as suspects. This can result in delays, poor investigations, and loss of trust. Victims must be able to report abuse without fear; better police responses are essential for safety and justice.
