Open petition: Ban recording devices that process personal data without consent
Created by John Stewart MacInnes
Closes on
Pass a law which enacts a comprehensive ban on the sale, distribution, and operation of recording devices that process personal data, through AI or other means. This should include biometric, facial or audio recognition, without the explicit, verifiable consent of the individuals being recorded.
Anyone can now buy AI powered wearable devices that record audio & video in public and private spaces, without people being aware. We believe these devices destroy people’s privacy and enable criminal and anti-social behaviour.
Under this law, we want consent-by-design where anyone recorded gives verifiable consent, strict liability for device users without permission of those recorded, a ban on non-consensual data processing, and transparency, so all devices have a clear external signal when recording.
