Petition Mandate a national referendum for any petition reaching 1 million signatures
Introduce legislation to require a national referendum for petitions with 1m+ signatures, open to UK citizens and residents with settled status.
More details
Currently, petitions reaching 100K signatures can only lead to a debate, often leading to no action from the Government. We think a 1m signature threshold represents a huge mandate that deserves a binding vote. Residents with settled status (ILR/EUSS) pay taxes and are permanent members of our society; they must have a say in major national changes. To manage costs (historically £75m–£130m per vote), referendums should be bundled into one annual “Decision Day” or held during elections. We think this would turn the petitions site into a tool for real democratic change.
