Rejected petition The vaginal and C/S birth numbers required by the NMC for student midwives
We would like the requirements to change according to the increase of caesarean section births accounting to almost 50% of births. Student midwives provide intense care and support during a caesarean section and currently these births are not included in our required numbers.
More details
Many of us, nationally, are experiencing difficulty in gaining the required numbers to graduate. When the caesarean birth rate is so high, this means less opportunity for vaginal births of which some are instrumental deliveries, which students cannot count. We are having to work extra hours to attempt to reach these numbers including over allocated annual leave or study time. We feel the numbers required should be 30 vaginal births and 20 caesarean sections.
