Open petition: Make a statutory requirement for schools to have a bereavement policy for pupils
Created by Katrina Goodwin
Closes on
A bereavement policy is necessary for well-being but should not be watered down or muddied by a mental health policy as grief is significantly different. We believe the policy for it should encompass a pupil passport for the longevity of a child's entire education to support learning and retention.
We are concerned that the required equitable support for bereaved children is not currently in place. The time, emotion and even financial impact that parents can have to undergo in order to have to repeat the same conversations to multiple staff year after year is both exhausting and unnecessary. We think a passport system which is supported with a sturdy bereavement policy would work and this could change school retention for children.
