Open petition: Exempt motorists from paying road tax on roads of poor quality
Created by Mike Bradbury
Closes on
Introduce a system where motorists are exempted from road tax charges for roads that are unsafe and have potholes and poor road surfaces. Motorists would only pay per mile road charges or road tax on roads that meet a defined minimum quality standard.
Under this system, motorists could record damage on roads on a website. UK motorists already pay significant amounts in fuel duty, Vehicle Excise Duty, and other transport taxes, yet we feel road conditions continue to deteriorate. Potholes and poor road surfaces can cause vehicle damage, increase congestion, and create safety risks for all road users. Linking any per-mile charging to road quality could create accountability, ensure fair value for motorists, and incentivise proper maintenance before additional charges are imposed.
