Open petition: Prohibit the Use of Mobile Devices During Formal Parliamentary Proceedings
Created by Dan Marfell
Closes on
We want the House of Commons to adopt rules to restrict MPs from using mobile phones and tablets during formal parliamentary proceedings. Clear guidance and appropriate sanctions should ensure compliance and maintain professional standards.
Parliament sets the standard for public life. When MPs use personal devices during debates, it gives us the impression of distraction and a lack of seriousness. Most workplaces expect full attention during formal proceedings, and elected representatives should meet at least the same standard. We believe that restricting device use would reinforce professionalism, improve public confidence, and show respect for democratic debate.
