Open petition: Require Directors be responsible for and minimise company’s environmental impact

Created by James Crowe Curran
Closes on

We call on the Government to amend the Companies Act 2006 to require the Director to not just promote the success of the company and have “regard to” the company’s impact on the environment, but to mandate that the Director must demonstrably, in all decisions, minimise impact on the environment.

We think this could include being responsible for minimising company’s climate emissions & use of materials, and maximising biodiversity. In our view, the UK carbon footprint is driven by consumption & only declined 10% between 1996 and 2022. UK is one of the most nature-depleted countries on Earth. In our view, business decisions drive this climate & nature crisis, and we think this amendment supports responsible companies & promotes a resilient future for all UK businesses.
