Open petition: Introduce a statutory ban on mobile phones in secondary school lessons

Created by Catherine Atkinson
Closes on

Many pupils are constantly distracted in class by mobile phones and endless notifications, including bullying messages sent in seconds, photos of pupils and teachers taken and uploaded without consent, and secret recordings. This can cause stress levels to soar and for young people to lose out.

Research and government guidance highlight that mobile phones disrupt learning, increase cyberbullying and affect sleep, focus and wellbeing. Yet without clear legislation, we feel secondary schools struggle to consistently enforce bans, facing unnecessary challenges from parents and pupils. Government-backed law could standardise expectations, strengthen enforcement, protect pupils from online harm and support calmer, more focused classrooms.
