Open petition: Reverse the decision to abolish the Hereditary Peers

Created by Charles White
Closes on

The Government and Parliament should reverse their decision to abolish the 92 Hereditary Peers in the House of Lords, and should instead review and dismiss the number of Life Peers that have been appointed by political leaders. We believe these are purely political appointments, not based on merit.

We believe that the HPs are an entrenched aspect of the British constitutional order, and their abolition is not only spitting in the face of our history, but also displays the hypocrisy of the Government by attacking the HPs on account of their privilege, but wouldn't do the same for an institution like the Monarchy, because doing so would undoubtedly topple any British Government regardless of party affiliation. Either apply the same logic to all similar positions in the UK or none of them at all.
