Open petition: Allow people to take an oath of allegiance to the UK instead of the Crown
Created by Christopher Camacho
Closes on
Allow members of the armed forces, the police, judges, and MPs to take an oath of allegiance to the nation (Great Britain and Northern Ireland), instead of the King. We believe that in a democracy, you swear allegiance to a people, whereas in a dictatorship, you swear allegiance to a single person.
Britain is one of the few countries in Europe where you take an oath of allegiance to the King. In 2012, the Sovereign Grant replaced the Civil List together with other grants. In 2012/2013, the Sovereign Grant was £31 million. In 2025/2026, the Sovereign Grant is £132.1 million. We can’t complete HS2, in spite of substantial revenues from North Sea oil. Other countries have completed high speed rail links without North Sea oil.
