Open petition: Cap Out-Of-Hours Veterinary Fees to Prevent Pet Abandonment
Created by Sharon Goldring
Closes on
Introduce regulations to cap charges for essential veterinary emergency treatments carried out outside normal working hours, ensuring fees are fair, transparent, and proportionate, by scrapping excessive mark-up prices.
Pet owners are being charged disproportionately high fees for basic veterinary treatments outside normal hours. While higher costs for emergency care are expected, many practices charge 200–300% more for routine procedures such as blood tests and IV fluids. These costs place owners under severe financial pressure, sometimes forcing them to surrender or euthanise pets. With many dogs/cats having to be given up or just abandoned on the streets.
