Open petition: Launch a review into the NHS 111 out of hours service

Created by James Ian Hope
Closes on

Launch a review into the NHS 111 out of hours service which investigates the following proposals: only using call handlers for contact details & basic problems, first line assessments by GPs, and nearby assessment centres and home visits for those who can’t attend for advice / treatment.

The review should also look into an easy call-back option if a condition changes. We feel the 111 service has failed to provide an appropriate alternative for GP services. We believe the triage system is slow and not operated by people with clinical knowledge, which can delay appropriate responses.

A clinician could assess a situation much faster and advise on an appropriate response to a problem, especially if it’s complex. You may need to be very insistent to avoid repeat call handlers’ questioning. Delays could result in death.
