Open petition: Eliminate wine duty for pubs and restaurants and help socialising

Created by Simon Fox
Closes on

UK consumers pay some of the highest wine taxes in Europe, with duty on a standard bottle of wine now reaching c£3.33 (February 2026). Applying this equally to wine bought for home use & wine bought to serve in pubs creates a massive price gap between supermarket home drinking & socialising in pubs

Reduce wine duty for hospitality venues to match European levels like Italy. We think high prices fuel isolation by making socialising unaffordable, forcing people to drink alone. We believe lowering the tax burden will:

Boost Mental Health: Make pubs affordable community hubs again.

Promote Safety: Encourage drinking in regulated social settings over high-volume home consumption.

Save Pubs: Increase footfall to stop venues closing and support the UK economy.
