Rejected petition Diminish parental right from parent convicted of killing a child’s other parent
We call on the UK Government to introduce legislation to automatically diminish parental responsibility from any parent convicted of murdering or manslaughter of their child’s other parent.
More details
Under current law, a parent who has killed their child’s other parent can still retain parental responsibility, including involvement in decisions about the child’s life. Families must go through lengthy and distressing court processes to remove these rights.
This can cause further trauma to children who may be forced into continued legal contact with the perpetrator.
We believe parental responsibility should be automatically eradicated upon conviction for such offences.
