Rejected petition Allow police to take more measures when pursuing stolen motorcycles.

We want the police to be able to take more action when in pursuit of stolen motorcycles. This includes, but is not limited to, maneuvers that result in the thieves being knocked off the motorcycle.

More details

Currently police cannot attempt to pursue motorcycle thieves if the rider or riders pose a danger to themselves. We believe strongly that the thieves have decided that riding dangerously without the correct protective gear is their own choice and therefore and injury or deaths that occur are due to the thieves' own negligence and not the fault of the police. Motorcycle thefts are extremely common and this is partly because thieves know that the police won't be able to do anything against them.

This petition was rejected

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s about something that the UK Government or Parliament is not directly responsible for.

Decisions on when to use tactical contact is an operational matter for individual Chief Officers, not the Government or Parliament.

We could accept a petition calling for a clear change to current laws. For example, to make it clear in law that police officers should not be regarded as being accountable for the driving of a suspected criminal who is attempting to avoid arrest by driving a motorbike in a dangerous manner, if that's something that you'd like to see.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
