Rejected petition End early release for prisoners serving sentences for murder.

We want the Government to change the law so that any individual convicted of murder must serve the entirety of the minimum term set by the judge, without the possibility of early release or sentence reduction due to “good behaviour” or earned credits.

More details

Early release is an insult to victims’ families; while offenders move on to marry or start careers, their victims have no such future. Current "life sentences" are often too short, and "good behaviour" is easily faked to halve a term, bypassing genuine rehabilitation. This undermines public confidence in the law’s ability to protect us. We must ensure murderers serve their full sentence to reflect the gravity of their crime, prevent reoffending, and provide true justice for the lives taken

This petition was rejected

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do.

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

It is already the case that offenders sentenced to a life sentence for murder with a minimum term can only be considered for release once they have served their minimum term. We cannot find any provision that allows for the minimum term to be reduced for "good behaviour" or for similar reasons. We therefore do not know what further action you would like Parliament or the UK Government to take.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
