Open petition: Government to begin the process to officially recognise Somaliland

Created by Sam Atkins
Closes on

Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 after the collapse of the Siad Barre regime, with the UN reporting that it had been subjected to genocide. For over 30 years we believe it has operated a stable, democratic state with its own government, currency, military and elections.

Somaliland has demonstrated all the hallmarks of a functioning state although it as yet remains unrecognised by any nation: peaceful democratic elections, rule of law, and regional stability in one of Africa's most volatile areas. We believe recognition would unlock trade, investment and development opportunities for its people, who have built this nation without international aid. We feel that the UK, with its historic ties to the region and commitment to democracy, is well-placed to lead on recognition and encourage allies to follow.
