Open petition: Create a Cross-Departmental Strategy to end "Zero-Consequence" Culture for Crime

Created by Yuet Chan
Closes on

The government should consider:
Mandated police attendance for all retail crime, even "low-value" theft
More legal protection for staff from dismissal when upholding the law
Updated curriculum to teach more accountability
More direct consequences for offenders to replace collective school bans

We are concerned that UK communities may face a systemic collapse of order due to what we see as a "zero-consequence" culture. We think that policing "low-value" theft has become optional, effectively decriminalizing some crime and eroding public trust. Shifting any accountability to schools via collective bans is a failed strategy that ignores individual responsibility. Furthermore, we feel that current frameworks penalize integrity, leaving staff vulnerable to dismissal for upholding the law. We must restore the rule of law, protect moral action, and realign educational values.
