Rejected petition: End the application of VAT on any tax or levy that does not itself add any value
Rejected on
End the Taxation of Taxes. Fuel Duty; the duty itself is currently capped at 52.95p, but it is then taxed at 20% [VAT] together with the wholesale and retail cost of fuel.
For a litre of petrol priced at 150p / litre, the VAT on Fuel Duty is 10.59p, with a further 14.41p VAT on the Wholesale and Retail cost; the total Fuel Duty and VAT take for the Government is 77.95p.
End the application of a ‘Value Added Tax’ on any tax or levy that does not itself add any ‘value’.
In the case of fuel, by not applying VAT to Fuel Duty, each visit to the pump saves the consumer 10.59p / litre.
Tax once not twice; use common sense to regulate price.
