Rejected petition: Change school opening times to 10 and leave at 4

Rejected on

Research from Switzerland and south Korea shows that later school starts times improve sleep, focus, wellbeing and academic performance. As teenagers are naturally predisposed to sleep later, early start times can reduce rest and negatively impact learning.

We urge the government and education authorities to pilot later school starts times, such as 10.00am-4.00pm, in both primary and secondary schools. This should include reviewing impacts on students wellbeing, academic performance, attendance, and mental health, while working with parents and schools to address transport, childcare, and scheduling challenges
