Open petition: Restore a national EV charge point database with new enforced data standards

Created by Iain Logan
Closes on

The government decommissioned the National Charge Point Registry and created what we see as unenforceable regulations. Data on EV charge points, many built with public money on public land, is held by private companies. Drivers often have to rely on charge point information from commercial apps.

The Public Charge Point Regulations 2023 requires operators to publish open data but sets, we believe, inadequate quality standards and enforcement mechanisms. The NCR was decommissioned in 2024 leaving no government-backed, central source of truth. We are concerned that many operators are international or foreign-owned companies receiving UK public grants to install chargers, then publishing what in our view is insufficient data or locking some behind commercial platforms.
