Rejected petition: Make GCSEs fairer: integrate Functional Skills.

Rejected on

One in three students fails GCSE English and maths. Many of the same students pass Functional Skills (60% maths, 80% English), whereas 15% pass resits. This petition calls for that practical approach to be integrated into GCSEs to improve success and life chances.

Following my TEDx talk and conversations with my MP, Mike Martin, I’m creating a place for people to show support when the video is released. This simple, cost-neutral change already exists, is proven to work, and could transform outcomes, confidence and life chances for thousands of young people being left behind by the current system.

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do.

We're not exactly sure what you mean by "integrate functional skills". For example, we're not sure if you'd like the Government to replace the current GCSE maths and English Language qualifications with the functional skills qualifications or if you'd like something different.

We currently have this petition open which you may wish to sign:

Make GCSE Maths optional and introduce an alternative, easier qualification: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/767527

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
