Open petition: Fund access for all women to a genetic blood test for breast cancer risk genes

Created by Zoe swinburn
Closes on

Fund a national NHS screening programme offering all women the opportunity to be tested for BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations. This could be offered alongside routine cervical screening appointments, such as at a woman’s first smear test or at her next scheduled appointment.

At present, testing is often only offered when someone meets certain criteria. My sister was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2025 and was only offered genetic testing because of her age. We feel that this highlights how limited access to testing can be. Why should women have to wait until illness to be offered the chance to know their risk? A national programme could move us towards prevention rather than relying mainly on treatment after diagnosis.
